How to Choose a Home Remodeling Contractor
Finding a reliable home remodeling contractor can make the difference between a job done the right way and a horrible nightmare.
We all have heard about home remodeling project stories ending up costing twice as much (or more), than the original estimate provided by the remodeling contractor. Unfortunately some home remodeling companies also choose not finish a renovation job.
It is important to do your research about the remodeling company before hiring anyone.
Word-of-mouth is probably the best way to go
Ask friends, relatives, neighbors and co-workers for references. People working in the trade such as paint stores, hardware stores, etc… can also often refer you to the right local home remodelers.
Customer reviews can be helpful but read them carefully to make sure a specific contractor is right for your remodeling project. Most contractors have received online reviews, on their own website, on Google, Yelp, Angie’s List and more.
You can even ask the company permission to call previous and present clients for feedback and references.
Do not rely on advertisement only
Newspapers, online ads are obviously paid publicity by the advertisers. Try search for “home remodeling Stamford CT” for example. Google will show its own ads first, the four listings on the top of the page.
This doesn’t mean those home remodeling companies are the best ranked by Google, it only means that they pay (a lot!) for those ad placements.
Then comes Google 3-pack (not paid for) with the organic search results following right underneath (not paid for). They are usually another four Google ads at the bottom of the page.
Ask for license and insurance certificates
Remodeling contractors and subcontractors should be licensed and insured.
- Do they have a list of previous clients
- How many projects do they work on at once
- Do they work with subcontractors and how long have they been working together
Choosing a quality home remodeling contractor isn’t the most fun part of any home remodeling project, but it is an important one.
In order to make sure your project goes smoothly and that you get your dream end result, you must take the time to find the right home remodeling company for your specific home remodeling project.
