Tinsmith Shop in Stamford, CT
Labor of Love.
Built in 1850, this house in Stamford, CT was formerly a tinsmith shop. Even though it was practically unlivable, having been neglected for over forty years, it was extremely charming. It was in need of a major home remodeling job.
We combined functionality and charm by mixing modern appliances, warm wood floors (wormy chestnut and Caribbean pine), limestone counter tops, butcher block cooking island tops.
The den was small and dark: New floors, windows, roof line created a much nicer and brighter space. We used a terra cotta plaster finish on the walls. We also rebuilt the brick fireplace, replacing it with a stone one and a beautiful hand-painted and distressed mantel.
We combined four small rooms (kitchen, bedroom, dining room, mudroom) into a large open kitchen/ dining area, which has become the main living area of the house.
